Let’s Talk Infidelity and Trauma
The disclosure of an affair is among the most devastating and painful experiences that couples face. It is also one of the most challenging and complicated problems encountered in therapy. Similarly, trauma and it's impacts is often experienced in relationships as a barrier to processing emotional experiences, building trust, intimacy and connection. This workshop will examine the theory of infidelity and it’s causes, the symptoms and relational impacts of trauma, models of treatment and present a range of interventional strategies for helping couples repair, rejuvenate and re-build their relationships utilising our unique approach to Integrated Couples Therapy.
Some of the challenges encountered in treatment that will be addressed are:
· how much about the affair should be disclosed,
· how to help with shattered trust,
· hyper vigilance, hyper-arousal and anxiety,
· and how to develop the skill of emotional attunement and build empathy between the partners.
Objectives: Participants will be able to: (1) Integrate complementary perspectives in the treatment of infidelity and trauma; (2) Identify key thematic considerations in understanding and treating infidelity and trauma, including pitfalls to avoid; (3) Address the issue of confidentiality in couples therapy with clarity; (4) Understand the importance of maintaining the primacy of joint sessions while also using individual sessions to support the joint couples work; (5) Gain knowledge of how to use a couple’s dialogue process and empathic emotional processing techniques to facilitate the couple’s work of emotional healing.
